Massai challenges the common assumption that the first editor of Shakespeare was Nicholas Rowe, who published his edition of Shakespeare's Works in 1709. Including six case studies of a selection of early printed playbooks, this book represents a sustained attempt to provide a prehistory of the official editorial tradition.
